Italy Secures Antonello da Messina’s Ecce Homo, Bringing a Renaissance Masterpiece Back Home

In early February 2026, the Italian State made a decisive move in the Old Masters market, acquirin Ecce Homo by Antonello da Messina, one of the very few works by the Renaissance master still in private hands. The painting was secured for $14.9 million (approximately €12.5 million) through Sotheby’s, just before it could go under the hammer in New York.

The acquisition, confirmed by the Italian Ministry of Culture, reflects a strategic effort to prevent the dispersion abroad of a work considered fundamental to Italy’s artistic heritage.² Sotheby’s had included the panel in its Old Masters sale with a pre-sale estimate of $10–15 million, but negotiations with Italian authorities led to the lot being withdrawn and purchased directly by the State.

The painting, dating to the 1460s, is a small double-sided tempera panel intended for private devotion. On the front, Christ crowned with thorns confronts the viewer with Antonello’s characteristic psychological intensity; on the reverse, Saint Jerome in penitence reinforces the intimate and meditative dimension of the object. This dual composition enhances the work’s rarity within Antonello’s already limited corpus.

Antonello da Messina occupies a pivotal role in Renaissance art history, credited with introducing oil painting techniques influenced by Northern Europe into the Italian peninsula.³ Today, only around forty works are generally attributed to him, the vast majority already housed in major public institutions worldwide. The reappearance of such a painting on the market is therefore an exceptional event.

From a market perspective, the transaction highlights the growing importance of state intervention in high-value cultural assets. Works of this caliber rarely circulate, and when they do, they attract global institutional and private interest. By acting swiftly, Italy transformed what could have become another internationally traded trophy asset into a permanent component of its national collection.

The Minister of Culture described the purchase as an operation of “the highest cultural value,” emphasizing the broader objective of strengthening Italy’s public collections and reinforcing the country’s cultural sovereignty.

In a market where Renaissance masterpieces seldom surface and prices continue to reflect their scarcity and historical weight, the acquisition of Ecce Homo stands as both a cultural safeguard and a strategic statement. More than a market transaction, it represents the reaffirmation of heritage as a national trophy asset — one whose value extends beyond financial metrics into identity, legacy, and collective memory.

Silver’s Rally Rewrites the Precious Metals Playbook

Source: J.P. Morgan (2026)

Silver is stepping out of gold’s shadow. After years of relative underperformance, the metal has staged a forceful rally, supported by a mix of macroeconomic tailwinds and resurgent investor appetite. Analysts at JPMorgan highlight how tightening supply conditions and firm industrial demand — particularly from the solar and electronics sectors — have underpinned the latest move, with price momentum accelerating as markets price in a more accommodative global monetary stance.

In Europe, and notably in Italy, the rally has sparked renewed interest among retail investors. According to Milano Finanza, the surge in both gold and silver prices is prompting savers to reassess their portfolios, with many weighing whether now is the time to lock in gains or continue riding the uptrend. The publication underscores how volatility, rather than deterring investors, has created tactical opportunities in Milan’s bullion market, where physical demand remains robust.

Beyond its traditional safe-haven appeal, silver’s ascent is also being framed in broader asset-allocation terms. A recent analysis on Money Metals Exchange notes that silver has climbed the ranks of global assets by market value, reinforcing its status as a strategic component in diversified portfolios. The metal’s dual role — part precious metal, part industrial input — is increasingly seen as a structural advantage, offering both defensive characteristics and exposure to long-term technological trends.3

The 2025 edition of The I.C.E. St. Moritz was held on the 21st and 22nd of February 2025, positioning it firmly in the latter part of the winter season. his event was described as a “record-breaking edition” in terms of participation and attendance, transforming the frozen lake into a stage for automotive excellence. A total of 52 iconic classic and sports cars were selected to appear on the ice, illustrating the event’s commitment to celebrating motoring history and design beauty. The vehicles were evaluated across five distinct categories: 1- Barchettas on the Lake, 2- Open Wheels, 3- Concept Cars & One-Offs, 4- Icons on Wheels and 5- Racing Legends.

Some of the standout winners included:

  • Ferrari 500 TRC Scaglietti (1957) – Winner in Barchettas on the Lake
  • Bugatti 59 (1934) – Highest honor and Best in Show
  • Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Aprile (1931)
  • Ferrari 275 GTB/4 (1966)

The atmosphere extended beyond static displays, including dynamic free laps by participating cars across the frozen surface, adding an experiential and dramatic component to the weekend.

The 2026 edition was scheduled earlier in the winter season than previous years, taking place on 30th and 31st January 2026. Like the prior edition, this event transformed Lake St. Moritz into an extraordinary arena where automotive artistry meets winter spectacle. The frozen lake, surrounded by alpine grandeur, hosted a curated selection of both historic and modern high-performance cars that paraded and performed throughout the weekend. Reported figures suggest more than 50 vehicles participated, reflecting the continued international appeal of the event. In addition to static judging, the 2026 edition featured dynamic driving on the ice, with free laps and public displays that demonstrated both classic and modern performance machines in motion. The event’s program also engages lifestyle and design components, framing The I.C.E. not merely as a car show but as an immersive experience of luxury, culture, and style, attracting international visitors beyond the typical automotive enthusiast. Official organizers emphasized heritage, style, and emotion as key pillars of the experience, ensuring the event remains both culturally relevant and visually stunning.

The I.C.E. St. Moritz has quickly evolved from a novel idea into one of winter’s most anticipated automotive events. Founded to celebrate classic and modern automotive design against the breathtaking backdrop of a frozen alpine lake, the event has grown in prestige and international reach since its inception. The 2025 edition showcased record attendance and remarkable vehicles, while the 2026 event demonstrated continued creative vision and public engagement. Seen through the lens of design, performance, and cultural experience, The I.C.E. St. Moritz stands at the intersection of art and automotive passion, making it an event that transcends the ordinary car show.

Porsche’s Strategic Reversal: Rethinking the All-Electric Macan

Former Porsche CEO Oliver Blume publicly acknowledged that making the next-generation Porsche Macan exclusively electric was a strategic mistake, a rare admission of error from a leading executive in the premium automotive industry. Blume, who stepped down from his role at the beginning of 2026, explained in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the decision to transform the Macan — one of Porsche’s best-selling models — into an EV-only vehicle was based on the market data and regulatory expectations available at the time, but that real-world demand for pure electric luxury SUVs cooled faster than anticipated. He stated plainly, “We were wrong about the Macan” highlighting that the company misjudged the pace and preferences of the global automotive market.

Porsche Macan: dal 2024 possibile addio ai motori a benzina

Porsche’s original strategy, announced in 2019, envisioned phasing out the internal combustion Macan and replacing it fully with an electric variant by early 2024, a bold move designed to align with accelerating electrification trends. At the time, Porsche believed that prioritizing battery-electric vehicles would meet future customer expectations and regulatory demands. However, sales and customer reception of the electric Macan did not match these projections, particularly among traditional Porsche buyers who valued autonomy, flexibility, and the driving engagement associated with combustion engines. Blume acknowledged that although the decision made sense given the information then, the rapid shift in market conditions revealed the shortcomings of an all-EV strategy for this core segment.

In response to this strategic misstep, Porsche is revising its product roadmap by reintroducing vehicles with combustion and hybrid powertrains in segments where customer demand remains strong. Rather than simply reviving the old Macan, the company plans to launch a new compact SUV by 2028, positioned below the Porsche Cayenne and likely based on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture shared with the Audi Q5, to combine thermal and electrified options effectively. This upcoming model will not carry the Macan nameplate, reflecting Porsche’s intent to symbolically reset its approach while still addressing the segment’s needs.

The company’s rethinking goes beyond SUVs. Porsche has also adjusted its strategy for its future sports cars, such as the 718 Boxster and Cayman, which were initially planned to be fully electric. Instead, these models will continue to be available with combustion engines or hybrid combinations to preserve performance character and appeal to traditional enthusiasts. Porsche’s candid admission and subsequent course correction underscore a broader industry trend in which automakers are balancing electrification goals with pragmatic responses to actual market behavior, regulatory environments, and enduring consumer preferences.

Luxury No Longer Untouchable: London’s Prime Housing Market Declines

Source: Benhams.com

In 2025, London’s housing market has gone from being one of the strongest in the UK to one of the weakest, especially in central and prime areas where prices have clearly fallen. Official figures show that London recorded a 2.4% annual decrease in house prices up to October 2025, making it the lowest-performing region in England.

There are several reasons for this change. In prime central London, demand has slowed down significantly. Savills reported 6% fewer agreed sales above £1 million in 2025 compared to 2024, and there were 15% more price reductions on listings as sellers tried to attract buyers. Inner London prices fell by approximately 3% year-on-year, while some outer boroughs still saw small increases. Uncertainty about possible tax changes made buyers more cautious, and high mortgage rates have made borrowing more expensive. In addition, the end of favorable non-dom tax rules reduced interest from wealthy international buyers. All of this has added to existing affordability problems and general economic uncertainty.

The effects are being felt different across the city. Homeowners in central areas like Westminster and Camden have seen the value of their properties drop, which affects personal wealth, especially those relying on property as an investment. Luxury investors and landlords are also rethinking their strategies as the high-end market slows. However, for middle income buyers and first time buyers, falling prices may create new opportunities in a city that has long been seen as unaffordable.

Looking ahead, experts predict that prices are more likely to stabilize in 2026 rather than rise sharply. Any recovery will probably depend on lower mortgage rates and clearer government policy. Overall, London’s housing market seems to be moving into a slower and more balanced phase.
